New Year's Eve Ski Trip

Amy, Craig, and I went skiing at Lolo Pass on New Year's Eve day. Amy had called the hotline to check on snow conditions there, and thought she had misunderstood the lady to say there was 6 feet of snow. We'd been up there just 2 weeks before, and there was less than 2 feet then. But, as you can see from the photo of the parking lot, she wasn't mistaken (for scale, Craig is roughly 6'4" and is standing on the plowed parking surface; I'm standing on a snow berm next to him). Holy snowbank!

The skiing was nice, but definitely tougher with several inches (8-ish) on top of the groomed trails. It was pretty sticky, and we weren't able to glide much at all, so the 6 miles took us nearly 2.5 hours to complete. It made us a little nervous to think about doing 16 miles for the OSCR-- even though those miles will be on groomed trails and will have more downhill bouts.

I estimated that trip burned nearly 900 calories. Not bad. Of course, I ate those all back-- and more-- at dinner later in the evening (stuffed mushrooms, Asian cabbage salad, tri-tip steak and crab legs, baked potato, whole wheat crescent rolls, and O'Henry bars (chocolate, honey, peanuts, etc)).

It was a great day, and a great way to end out 2007. Hope you all had a good one, too!
